According to the Guinness Book of World Records the fastest anyone has ever riden the subway to all 468 subway stations in the New York City system is 22 hours, 52 minutes and 36 seconds. But today, Transportation Alternatives is sending out their advocate Stefanie Gray to try and break the record. Why? To help bring attention to their campaign to stop the impending MTA fare hike. That is why TA is calling the stunt the "Race to Stop the Fare Hike."
The "fun" starts today in Penn Station and then presumably will continue for at least the next 20 hours. How long will the whole thing take the 24-year-old Gray? That's still up in the air as she's been working out her route up until the last moment. "It’s all logistics," Gray told Capital. "My background is actually in geography and [Geographic Information Systems], so I’ve been using a lot of complex mapping software to try to figure this out."
So what does she need to do to "win?" In order to break the record Gray will have to ride trains whose doors open at every stop, keep a detailed log book and take time-stamped photos of every stop. Hope she's got a good book! For updates on how she's doing, here's Gray's Twitter. Or just sign up here.
