An NYPD officer accidentally fired their gun inside a Bed-Stuy subway station Thursday, and fragments of the bullet struck both a second officer and a bystander, according to the department.
Police had initially told Gothamist Thursday no one was struck in the incident, before issuing a statement Friday saying the fragment “came into contact” with the two people. The NYPD hasn’t responded to an email seeking clarification about the discrepancy between the two versions of events, and said by phone Saturday it had no information to share beyond the statement.
The gunshot happened around 4:40 p.m. Thursday at the Kingston-Throop Avenues station on the C line, the NYPD said. Both the second officer and the bystander, a 34-year-old woman, sustained minor injuries. Afterward, the woman and both officers were taken to a nearby hospital and were later released, the NYPD said. Police did not describe the injuries.
Both officers have been placed on modified duty as a result of the incident, the NYPD said.
Police told Gothamist Thursday the first officer’s gun had never left their holster. A police official said at the time something had been stuck in the gun.
The department hasn't provided further details about how the gun went off, what the officers were doing at the time or whether the weapon may have malfunctioned. Police also didn’t describe how the bullet broke into fragments, or why all three people involved were taken to the hospital, when only two were described as struck.
The police have not released the names of any of those involved.
The NYPD said the department’s Force Investigation Division was looking into the matter.
