Though she was hoping to secure a lease, Astroland Owner Carol Albert told the Post that she will most likely never be able to resurrect Astroland Park in another area of the boardwalk. Rather than let Albert open a new park with both old and new rides, the city picked Central Amusement International to open up the new Luna Park. Albert has had her 22 rides in storage while trying to reach a settlement, but is now ready to sell them.
However, it's not all sad news. Firstly, CAI plans to fix and open the 275 ft. tall Astrotower ride that has just been sitting there for years. Secondly, the landmark Cyclone roller coaster is still set to run this summer, opening on March 28 with a gala event in which Marty Markowitz, as usual, will break a bottle of egg cream on the ride. The Cyclone's sign will also now be lit with LEED-certified lights, and the Wonder Wheel will get its lights back, powered by the sun. Albert told the Post, “With the arrival of the new Luna Park, this truly will be one of the most exciting summers in Coney in a long time.” Especially now that they're getting lions.
