Police say a Bellport woman was driving around Long Island with nearly 100 pounds of pot in her car yesterday. And she would have gotten away with it too, if she'd only put on her seatbelt and put down her cellphone!
According to Nassau County police, around 6 p.m. officers in an unmarked car noticed 27-year-old Mizzie Artis driving a 1999 Hyundai in North Bellmore with a cellphone to her ear and no seatbelt on. So they followed her a few blocks. And then things got interesting:
Artis drove to Armand Street and met a man in a minivan, but the man drove away after the officers drove by both vehicles, police said.
Artis also drove away, running a stop sign and not signaling her turn, police said.
After officers pulled Artis over, they saw two large boxes in the car and smelled marijuana, police said.
According to police Artis had roughly 92 pounds of pot in her car. Which is, we can all agree, a lot of pot. She was promptly arrested and charged with first-degree criminal possession of marijuana and "a variety of vehicle and traffic-law infractions."
After being arraigned in Hempstead yesterday Artis was released on probation. She is due back in court on Wednesday. Presumably she'll buckle up before heading in.
