Firefighters rescued two boys who were standing on the frozen-over Bronx River this afternoon. The FDNY says they got the call at around 4:34 p.m. about the situation near Whitlock Avenue and Westchester Avenue and had firefighters on the scene in minutes.
According to WABC 7, "The boy, believed to be 10, could be seen standing still as firefighters scrambled to reach him. There was reportedly a second child with him who managed to get off the ice before it began to crack. One first responder jumped into the water near the shore, while fellow rescuers lowered a ladder down the side of a bluff. The firefighter in the water was able to pass the ladder to the boy, who climbed over the broken ice to safety." The second boy was apparently about 10-15 feet from land.
Three people, including one firefighter, were taken to Jacobi Hospital with minor injuries.
