New Jerseyans are living in interesting times. Gov. Mikie Sherrill is joining WNYC Wednesday evening to hear your questions about them.

The World Cup is only 10 days away from coming to MetLife Stadium (sorry, make that “New York New Jersey Stadium” for the duration of the matches). It’s supposed to be an economic boon for the region. But hotel bookings are slow. Gov. Mikie Sherrill’s not getting the 45% local sales tax hike she and some lawmakers hoped to use to recoup costs in busy areas around the games. State attorneys general in New Jersey and New York are investigating sky-high ticket prices. The possibility of the NBA Finals coinciding with the first few matches is a potential nightmare for regular and event commuters alike. That's even if a fire or other issue doesn't bring the whole transit system crashing down for hours or days.

And that’s not the only reason all eyes are on New Jersey — and how Sherrill handles the challenges in front of her.

The Delaney Hall immigrant detention center in Newark has become the flashpoint of the national immigration debate, with detainees alleging they’re being fed food with worms in it, have limited access to healthcare and are being pressured to sign deportation documents. Sherrill had state and local police take over crowd control of protests outside from ICE — setting up “protected protest” zones. Those and Newark’s curfew around the center seem to have done nothing to head off near-nightly violent clashes between protesters and law enforcement, but they’ve raised questions about the balance between safety and free speech.

The state budget is a month away. Datacenters are peppering the landscape. There’s a primary election for the ever-consequential mid-terms this week. An April freeze was devastating for New Jersey’s crops. And who knows what Shore tourism will be like this year with prices on everything from gas to groceries sky-high?

WNYC "Morning Edition" host Michael Hill will ask the governor about the latest developments in New Jersey news Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. for the second installment of “Ask Governor Sherrill” — in partnership with WBGO in Newark, WHYY in Philadelphia and South Jersey, and Montclair State University. The program continues WNYC’s tradition of offering New Jerseyans a direct line to their elected officials, a day after “Ask The Mayor” on WNYC’s “The Brian Lehrer Show.”

We want to hear directly from you. Call in at 844-745-8255 to speak with the governor, or submit your questions here in advance. The program airs on 93.9 FM, WNYC.org and the WNYC app.

“Ask Governor Sherrill” airs live from the studios of Montclair State University’s College Of Communication and Media.
