A two-year-old child was fatally struck by a subway train at a lower Manhattan subway station during the evening rush hour on Wednesday.
The NYPD and FDNY said they received calls about an incident involving a person struck by a train at the Fulton Street station just after 5:30 p.m. First responders with the FDNY found the child under the train and rushed him to New York Downtown Hospital in critical condition.
The NYPD confirmed the victim was a two-year-old boy and said that he passed away at the hospital.
Police sources tell the Daily News that "it appears the little boy’s foot slid off the platform and that he was pulled between it and a moving train." (The News had initially reported sources saying the stroller might have gotten stuck between the train and platform.)
A witness on the platform told Gothamist that she had been waiting for a southbound train when she heard "horrible screams." She said she and other commuters turned and saw a commotion on the uptown side.
"A kid was wedged between between the train and the tracks," she said. "People were crying and screaming, saying a 'baby' was caught down there."
WNYC reporter Jessica Gould, who was on southbound train that bypassed the station at the time, saw a "woman lying down screaming on the platform and an older woman wailing on the steps. Two police officers carried the younger woman away."

NYC Transit President Andy Byford said, "Our hearts break for the family and the MTA is praying for them." He added that the investigation is ongoing.
