Maybe the NYPD's years-long efforts to clean up the counterfeit markets in Chinatown are starting to pay off? Otherwise why would a person bother to go and steal a crocodile handbag from Ralph Lauren worth between $16,995-$18,500?
According to the NYPD, on Saturday, February 12, a middle-aged woman in her 40s or 50s walked into the Ralph Lauren Stores on Madison Avenue around 3:35 p.m., picked up the not cheap (or attractive) bag and walked out without paying for it. Now the NYPD is hoping you might be able to help them find her. She apparently has brown hair, a thin build and weighs about 110 pounds. On the day of the theft she was "wearing a tan three quarter length coat, maroon scarf, black pants and black boots." If you know anything, cops ask that you call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477).
A few thoughts: Maybe she just forgot to pay? Or maybe the woman wasn't actually stealing the bag. Maybe she was a covert PETA volunteer and was "liberating" it? Because really, that is an ugly bag to risk jail time for. If you were to force us at gunpoint to steal a bag worth more than our annual rent, we'd at least go for something classic like an $85,000 Birkin. Or the pink $125,750 version. Or at least something we could laugh about with our friends later, like one of the Olsen twin's $39,000 backpacks. Or maybe we just don't get handbag culture.
