The city announced today that it would begin regulating and limiting the amount of people allowed in certain parks in an attempt to stop the clustering that has been happening on warmer days. But it likely won't be much of a problem this Saturday, because apparently... it is gonna be January again outside? Since the coronavirus and the murder hornets weren't stressful enough, now we have to deal with a polar vortex in May.
This weather event will bring rain, thunderstorms and possibly even snow to the northeast. While NYC won't see the worst of it, temperatures will dip into the 30s tonight, and there is a chance we get some small snowfall as well. The last time temps dipped below 40 in NYC in May was over 40 years ago. And the last time it snowed in the city was late April, which in pandemic time was 17 months ago.
On Saturday, the temperature will inch up to the high 40s/low 50s, but wind gusts of over 30 MPH will make it feel like it's colder than that outside. Things will warm up more on Sunday, when it's supposed to be mostly sunny with temps back into the upper 50s to 60s (which is still over 10 degrees cooler than normal for this time of year). As the National Weather Service very excitedly put it, "These backward trajectories would be impressive for mid-Winter let alone mid-Spring!"
The city has issued a "Code Blue" starting at 4 p.m. Friday as well, which comes as the city struggles to help shelter the homeless population during the pandemic, and they have been kicked out of the subways due to the overnight shutdown.
