[Update Below] Two people were injured—including a toddler—after a metal roll-down gate collapsed in Park Slope this afternoon. The incident happened around 4:15 p.m. outside the 5th Avenue Cat Clinic at 225 5th Avenue (near President Street). A witness told us the woman was hit in the head and was bleeding profusely, and the toddler had what appeared to be a leg injury. FDNY confirmed the injuries, and said both were transported to Lutheran Hospital.
One witness told us she was in a store at the time of the collapse: "I was in a store, and heard a huge crash and glass breaking, then I heard a baby screaming and other people screaming...When I went outside there were people surrounding the woman, who was on the sidewalk with blood covering her face, and the child had blood on his leg and he was inconsolable." The witness added that the woman appeared to be the toddler's babysitter, and the mother arrived five minutes after the accident. "The look on her face broke my heart," the bystander tells us.
Our tipster says the roll-down gate was connected to the Cat Clinic, but an employee at the clinic refused to answer any questions about the accident.
Update: According to the FDNY, the woman had a "very bad head injury," and is in "serious condition." They added that she is believed to be in her 50s, and the child is believed to be 5, but both those ages are unconfirmed as of yet.
