Just a reminder that the 8th annual Idiotarod race is starting at Maria Hernandez Park in Bushwick in less than an hour. Check-in is at 10:53 a.m., and the race start time is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Organizers remind that, "There is NO FOOD THROWING. Do not bring food to throw, it will be taken from you. Please remember to bring a hard copy of your completed application form." [Update Below]
Organizers are hush-hush about the route of the race, but we'll update with checkpoints as we learn them. If you catch any of the cart-pushers out there, email us at [email protected], and send us your photos or tag them "Gothamist" on Flickr.
Update: We have some photos from the start of the race above, and a video of Team Mardi Gras warming up below. Hopefully the race won't be broke up: Muppitz tweets, "Awful lady called the cops re: a snowball fight. Idiotarod off to a great start." Dumbo Books of Brooklyn also spotted the snowball fight between participants on either side of Grattan Street.
Update: According to Dumbo Books of Brooklyn, this years' Idiotarod had it's first checkpoint at Grattan Street, with a party at the Pine Box Rock Shop.
According to our own lovely Katie Sokoler, the race "ended on Greenpoint ave and kingsland ave. The after party is at coco66 in greenpoint!" You can see some more pictures here, and we'll have photos from Katie up soon!
