The L train will begin its first of five hibernation weekends today, suspending service between 8th Avenue and Lorimer Street Friday night through Monday morning until May 18th. There are some creative ways for commuters to cross the East River, of course—there's the J train, which you can connect to via free shuttles at L stations, or the G, or buses, or biking. And Uber, never one to miss out on a marketing opportunity, is throwing their hat into the ring, offering $5 flat fare rates via their UberPOOL app.

The $5 fares run per person, and only count along the L route between Williamsburg and Manhattan. They also require you to split a ride with a stranger, since the app matches you up with a rider taking a similar route—not that you don't get plenty of practice with that on the L train. But, hey, $5 is $5, and Uber promises there will be no surge price increases on that flat rate. You can trust them!
