In a lawsuit filed against the Taxi and Limousine Commission last week, the New York Taxi Workers Alliance argues that lifting the cap unfairly harms yellow taxi drivers.

The money will help settle claims that the companies illegally withheld taxes and fees from drivers from 2014 to 2017.

The change, which goes into effect on Thursday, could allow companies including Uber, Lyft and Revel to deploy thousands more cars on city streets.

The taxi owners claimed the city led them astray when selling them medallions before a major ride-sharing expansion.

Uber is working on an e-bike exchange program, and a New York-based startup is looking to expand its e-bike rental system for delivery workers, as e-bike and scooter batteries draw scrutiny from legislators.

Neither rideshare representatives nor city sources could say who would pay tens of thousands of rideshare drivers to transition to electric vehicles.

“Such a significant fare hike, right before the holidays, would irreparably damage Uber’s reputation, impair goodwill, and risk permanent loss of business and customers,” Uber says in the lawsuit.

Uber and Lyft have allowed fuel surcharges elsewhere, but are not allowing them for New York City drivers, who were given an unrelated pay bump following a local 2018 mandate.
