Super Tuesday is supposed to be a decisive catalyst in the presidential campaigns. It may wind up raising more questions than ever, especially with Mayor Bloomberg (not officially) entertaining a run towards 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.
Today, the New York Sun reports a data analysis firm's claim that it's "empirically possible" for Mayor Bloomberg to become President, even if moderately-positioned John McCain wins the Republican nomination. Symposia Group has been crunching electoral data and thinks Bloomberg could go all the way. The fact that Symposia's major client is, uh, Mayor Bloomberg suggests he is entertaining a bid (it also seems financially best for Symposia to draw out the mayor's chances as long as possible).
There was some thought Barack Obama's success might derail the Mayor's chances, and now, with McCain doing so well, Bloomberg in 2008 might just be a dream. California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has identified Bloomberg as his political "soul mate, but the Governator's recent endorsement of McCain might have cooled the mayor's enthusiasm.
One super far-fetched scenario: Democrats wind up with a brokered convention, with neither Clinton or Obama willing to blink, so Bloomberg rides in as a white horse takeover candidate willing to pledge billions in campaign money, with promises of non-career-ending administration appointments for everyone. Another from the Sun: A McCain-Bloomberg ticket, again with billions in campaign spending money!
