A Staten Island man was charged with killing his wife's dog in a rage because it had pooped on the floor. Police say that registered sex offender Nashbert Smith "repeatedly swung the dog by its leash against a wall, then choked it to death" in their apartment on Vanderbilt Avenue near Prince Street on Wednesday.
According to wife Diamond Smith, her husband called and demanded she return home Wednesday after he discovered that Lady, her Jack Russell Terrier, had pooped indoors. When she got to the apartment, he allegedly flew into a rage, and proceeded to beat the dog, despite her protestations; "F---k the dog," he told her as he choked her pet to death.
Lady suffered brain trauma, bruised lungs and internal bleeding, and was pronounced dead at the hospital. Smith has two drug-related convictions in Staten Island, and is a registered Level 2 Sex Offender-in 2003, he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count of sexual misconduct after being accused of having sex with a girl under the age of 15. He was charged with a felony count of aggravated cruelty to animals; he could be sentenced to up to one and a third to four years in prison.
