Segways in Times Square; Photo - NY Daily News

The Daily News profiles actual Segway owners in New York City. As for using it in the city, the News reports:

Building security can get downright ornery when a Segway rolls into their lobby. Naysayers are concerned about clogged streets and clogged arteries.

By Segway's count, 34 states permit Segways on sidewalks. In New York, there are no rules governing Segway. But the state Senate is considering a bill that would permit them on sidewalks everywhere except New York City.

Everyone enthuses about the machine, including one owner, Itsi Atkins, a retired film production manager who has ridden his Segway in the St. Patrick's Day parade, inside an Atlantic City casino and from booth-to-booth at the Triple Pier Antiques Show, who says, "It's the same reason why 'Chicago' won the Academy Award. 'Chicago' was lighthearted and fun, and Segway is the same. It's a joy to see people smile when they see it." Huh? Everyone KNOWS Chicago won because Miramax had a very aggressive marketing campaign, starting with... Oh, screw it.

Gothamist's previous Segway coverage: Gina Gershon couldn't ride a segway but some dude in Brooklyn can.
