If you needed more convincing that this miserable winter weather's hellbent on turning our subway system into a giant pile of twisted steel, a 6 train derailed this morning. Now the MTA will suspend service between 125th Street and Hunts Point Avenue overnight, there will be delays during the evening rush, and there may be residual delays in the morning. On the bright side, no FASTRACK on the 4,5! It's nice to have these small blessings.
The MTA says that an empty 6 train derailed at around 7:30 a.m. this morning on the middle track at Longwood Avenue, while it attempted to tow another train that wouldn't start. According to the Daily News, trains were underground last night thanks to the bitterly cold weather. "For whatever reason this one train didn't want to move this morning," a source told the tabloid. "So they pulled another train up to rescue it and pulled it back to the yard. And as the other train was pulling it, it derailed." (According to the MTA, the ninth car of the towing train derailed).
Tonight, 6 service will be suspended in both directions between 125th Street and Hunts Point Avenue, from about 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. The 6 will also not run express between 3rd Avenue-138th Street and Hunts Point Avenue during evening rush hour, and according to the MTA's website, southbound 4 and 6 trains are running with delays. Some southbound 5 trains are making local stops from 125th Street to Brooklyn Bridge. Planned FASTRACK on the 4,5 lines has been canceled tonight.
The MTA cautions that though "[c]rews will work to restore regular weekday service on the 6 Line for Wednesday morning," there may be delays with 6 express service on the downtown track, so if you're heading south into Manhattan tomorrow, prepare accordingly.
