Severe thunderstorms, harsh winds and heavy rain are expected to soak New York City this weekend, according to the National Weather Service, which also warned of potential flooding.

The weekend will start with temperatures up to the high 90s before scattered showers and thunderstorms approach the city by late Saturday afternoon, including 15 mph winds, NWS meteorologist James Tomasini said.

Tomasini said localized flash floods are a possibility, with the potential to last through the weekend.

“Definitely don’t drive through any flooded roads,” he said. “Try to stay off the roads if possible, and if a severe thunderstorm warning is issued, it’s best to stay inside.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani urged New Yorkers to keep emergency supplies on hand. He also specifically advised those living in basement apartments to heed the notice and sign up for alerts from the city as the storms progress.

“Plan for travel delays, keep emergency supplies on hand, and check on your neighbors, especially seniors and anyone who may need a hand getting ready,” Mamdani said in a social media post on Friday.

The city’s emergency management system also urged residents to gather supplies, including non-perishable food, flashlights and extra batteries.

Those living in basement apartments are advised to have a packed go bag and clear exits in the event of severe rainfall and flooding.
