A police officer in the NYPD's Brooklyn gang unit was arrested on Saturday for allegedly punching his three-year-old son in the face. Yes, you read that right—punching his three-year-old son in the face.
Newsday reports that Jason Sharp, 37, of Bellmore, Long Island, was "charged with three misdemeanor counts of third-degree assault, endangering the welfare of a child and fourth-degree criminal mischief." The incident apparently occurred at 4:30 a.m.:
Authorities contend Sharp punched his 3-year-old son in the face, "causing swelling and bruising to the victim's right eye, cheek and the bridge of his nose." The boy's injuries "necessitated treatment at a hospital," according to a Nassau police statement in court documents.
According to Nassau police, the boy told them, "My daddy punched me in the face."
The incident occurred about 4:30 a.m. Saturday, records show. Authorities also say Sharp punched a hole in the wall of a hallway on the second floor of his Bellmore home while arguing with his wife. Nassau police said Sharp told them, "I had an argument with my wife and punched the wall, I had a few drinks today."
The NYPD confirmed to Newsday that Sharp is a member of the department in the Brooklyn gang unit.
While Sharp was released on his own recognizance, a judge issued orders of protection to keep him away from his wife, three-year-old son and five-year-old child.
