A temporary refund policy for expired NJ Transit tickets is about to expire itself.

The agency’s one-way and 10-trip tickets for bus, rail and light rail used to have no expiration dates. Then, in April, NJ Transit announced that as of July 1 those tickets would no longer be valid after 30 days, for both already-purchased and new tickets.

NJ Transit said the move would reduce the risk of fraud and save an estimated $25 million annually. But riders pushed back, and in May, the agency allowed for customers with these kinds of tickets purchased before June 1, 2024, to get them refunded through year’s end.

So, if you still have any unused one-way or 10-trip NJ Transit tickets from before June 1, you can get your money back before 2025 hits. Notably, tickets bought through the now-eliminated Flexpass program, which did have expiration dates, are not eligible for refunds.

For paper ticket holders

You’ll need to bring your physical ticket in person to an NJ Transit office or ticket window. If you also have receipts, bring those too, and expect it to take three to four weeks for the refund to be issued. For those without receipts, it could take longer.

For those who bought tickets on NJ Transit’s website

Print your tickets and follow the paper-ticket holder instructions by bringing them in person to an office or window.

For mobile app ticket holders

No action required: Your tickets should have automatically turned into credit within your NJ Transit app’s digital wallet.
