A New Hampshire man is accused of luring a NYC woman to his New England home via Craigslist, kidnapping her, and raping her for three days. Jeffrey Gray, a New Hampshire town official, had been on the lam for the last two weeks; he avoided police by checking himself into a veteran's hospital. He was caught yesterday by police, and charged with kidnapping, rape, false imprisonment and assault.
Gray, an elected planning board member of Windham, New Hampshire, allegedly responded to the 34-year-old woman's Craigslist ad—in it, she was looking to move into a new home somewhere in New England. Gray convinced her to come visit his house on March 5; police say he kept her captive for the next three days while raping her. After he drove her to Logan International Airport in Boston on March 9—she told her story to the Massachusetts State Police. Windham Police Captain Michael Caron said, "She went right to the first authority figure she found."
It turned out that Gray had several restraining orders filed against him, including one filed by an ex-girlfriend who claimed Gray threatened her and her children. He also has a rap sheet that includes criminal threatening and criminal mischief; his past behavior prompted the $50,000 bail. "I thought he was pretty reputable. I should have done a background check. I would have found he had a long history of problems with women," said his landlord, Kevin Bleeker.
