Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, to celebrate his accomplishments as a civil rights leader and to remember there is still work to be done in many areas, from racial equality to living a more peaceful, understanding existence. King's birthday is actually January 15, 1929, but the federal holiday has been observed on the third Monday of January since 1986 (the first time all 50 states observed the holiday was in 2000).
With the holiday, there are a number of closures. All government offices and schools are closed, as are all post offices except for the main branch at Eighth Avenue and 32nd Street. Financial markets are closed and most banks are closed as well. Alternate side of the street parking is suspended and there are not trash or recycling pickups. NYC Transit subways and buses are operating on a Saturday schedule, LIRR and Metro-North are operating on a holiday schedule and the Staten Ferry is operating a regular weekday schedule.
Today the Brooklyn Academy of Music hosts the 22nd annual Brooklyn Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King; it begins at 10:30AM. And this afternoon at 2:30PM, The Academy Theater in Manhattan will screen King: A Filmed Record...Montgomery to Memphis
