One day after the anniversary of Malcolm X's assassination, daughter Malikah Shabazz faces extradition to New York after being arrested in North Carolina on charges of identity theft. Warrants for her arrest were issued by the Queens DA office last June for obtaining credit in the name of Khaula Bakr, the widow of of one of Malcolm X's bodyguards. She was found when police came to her Asheville to ask why her 13-year-old daughter hadn't been attending school.

Shabazz reportedly gave the name "Mali Saban" to police, and one police source told the Post, "We ran a check and found several outstanding warrants." Chief Deputy Mike Garrison said, “I can only assume she did not want many people to know who she was." She reportedly used the credit line to pay bills and other expenses. Her lawyer also says her daughter was being homeschooled, and that he believes the warrants were taken out by a friend and related to the ongoing family feud between Shabazz and her sisters over the family estate. Shabazz has previously accused her sisters of theft.

Shabazz was born months after her father's assassination, and her mother died in 1997 in an apartment fire set by her then 12-year-old grandson. She is currently being held in jail without bond and will be brought to Queens for an arraignment. We've contacted the Queens DA's office for more information.
