Stephanie Madoff may be married to Ponzi schemer Bernard Madoff's son Mark, but she sure doesn't want to be saddled with the infamous last name. The Post and Daily News report on how she applied to change her and her children's last names because of the "embarrassment, harassment and endangerment associated with the name."
According to her petition, she was "notified of certain death and other threats made against the Madoff family...Though the threats were deemed unfounded, your petitioner fears for her safety and the safety of her children." The kids, Audrey and Nicholas, are three and one years old and Stephanie Madoff helpfully points out they have "never been convicted of a crime." The kids' pop Mark, who is accused of taking $65 million of ill-gotten gains and has had some weird, possibly depression-related episodes, said he didn't object to the name change.
Stephanie Madoff hopes to have "Morgan" as her and the children's new last name. In other Madoff news, a former aide to Bernie was just arrested for his involvement in the scheme.
