New York City and the rest of the Northeast is bracing for an intense nor’easter forecast to bring blizzard conditions Sunday evening into Monday. States of emergency have been declared for the city, Long Island, the Hudson Valley and all of New Jersey.

Gov. Kathy Hochul described 6 p.m. Sunday as “the witching hour” when the worst of the storm will begin to hit.

Authorities in both states are urging people to stay home during the storm, as travel is expected to be dangerous and difficult. Transit agencies have already planned modified schedules for Monday, and warn that further cancellations and changes could come depending on the weather.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced that the city’s public schools will be closed Monday and there won’t be any online classes either due to the incoming blizzard. A travel ban is in effect for much of the region from Sunday evening to Monday morning.

Air travel is already facing major disruptions, with 1,746 flights cancelled on Sunday at JFK, LaGuardia and Newark combined as of 4 p.m., according to the tracking service FlightAware.
