The first subway death of 2013 may have been alcohol related. More, but not much, information about the death by 2 train early Tuesday morning has come out and it appears the victim (a woman, not a man as we originally were told) was stumbling, possibly intoxicated, around the 34th Street station before she "climbed down onto the tracks herself" on New Year's Day.
The identity of the woman is still unknown, but sources told the tabloids the victim appeared to be in her 20s and was stumbling around "before she walked down a flight of service stairs to the track bed about 5:20 a.m." After getting into the tracks she either fell or lay down at the mouth of the tunnel and was killed by a northbound 2 train. No criminality is suspected.
"It’s sad. We don’t even know who she was, but she was someone’s daughter," Bilkis Akdar, 55, a newsstand clerk in the station at the time told the Post. Police have not yet been able to identify the woman, but the Post reports they "found a keychain tag that traced her back to New Jersey."
