Earlier this month
we looked at a whole bunch of state parks on the chopping block due to budget cuts, but we just got word that Williamsburg's East River State Park is safe... thanks to the hipsters. Or Senator Schumer. Or indie rock or something.
Assemblyman Joe Lentol announced the park would be spared the axe, and has been told a major reason is because of the revenue generated by the concerts held there by the Open Space Alliance and Jelly NYC.
In a statement, Lentol said, "We had a number of goals when we made that deal. We wanted to make sure that the concerts would be a fun and exciting experience for everyone, respectful of the community and also very importantly bring revenue directly into the East River State Park. Thanks to that deal and that funding we are now able to ensure that this important piece of open space continues to be available to everyone."
Hmm, if it's such a cash cow, was there ever a real fear of the Pool Parties shutting down in the first place?
