An inebriated street sweeper swept up in the holiday spirit has been accused of leading police on a low-speed, low-impact chase to Long Island on New Year's Day.
Brooklyn resident Jerry Mitchell, 48, had a blood-alcohol level twice the legal limit when he was arrested on charges of aggravated driving while intoxicated and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle on Thursday.
According to reports, cops received complaints about an erratic street sweeper near exit 17 on the Southern State Parkway on Long Island. CBS reports Mitchell told cops he was supposed to be cleaning parking lots in Brooklyn, but he wanted candy, got lost, and ended up on Long Island.
"One of our guys cut him off [and] intercepted him," a police source told The Post. "But he refused to pull over for almost 2 miles. I guess you could say it was a slow-speed chase. He was going about 35 miles per hour."
The Fast and The Furious this was not: Mitchell eventually pulled over west of Exit 26 near Bellmore Road, was given a sobriety test, and was arrested. "He works for a company doing this, and he has no license," the police source added. "He said he was going to buy candy and got lost."
