A woman riding a bike was struck and killed this morning by a delivery truck in Lefferts Gardens. EMS responded to a call that a cyclist was struck at around 11:27 a.m. at the intersection of Bedford Avenue at Empire Boulevard, where the woman was declared dead at the scene. An NYPD spokesman was unaware of which direction the truck or the cyclist was traveling, and said that while the investigation is ongoing, there is no criminality suspected.
At this location Bedford Avenue has bike lanes in both directions, while Empire Boulevard has them in its westbound lane. While the NYPD's Accident Investigation Squad appeared at the scene of this tragedy, yesterday we reported that isn't always the case. Fort Greene resident Jacob Stevens is suing the NYPD for failing to properly investigate the death of his wife after she was struck by a driver who had been drinking. Stevens' wife, Clara Heyworth, died of her injuries shortly after the incident. You can also read more about the AIS and the NYPD's policy of investigation fatal or near-fatal crashes here.
