Yesterday, the Daily News reported that some bird netting to reduce the amount of bird droppings at the Bronx Supreme Court was actually killing pigeons, because pigeons get caught there, and, in the words of a court employee, they "starve to death... The pigeons suffer, then they just leave their bodies in there to rot like garbage." Realizing that dead pigeon carcasses are bad publicity, the city now says they'll look for an alternative to the netting.

The Department of Citywide Administrative Services's said it would investigate ways to "humanely protect the birds as well as the building. This is a very unusual, unfortunate occurrence," adding, "Given the height of the location, additional equipment will be needed to make a full assessment. We will initially try to fix the netting and repair any holes that may exist, but will pursue other options as necessary." Which worries the Humane Society because that sounds like the slow, squeaky wheels of bureaucracy—its urban wildlife field director says, "Time has run out. We want to see some action." Yeah—how about getting this awesome prowler owl to scare pigeons?

In the meantime, the Canada geese killing continues.
