Two weeks into 2013, and the Brooklyn Nets have yet to lose a game. With this surprising development, we've decided to summarize this week's series of victories—consecutive wins number four, five, and six—with a coinciding mixtape of sorts. You might think it's poor form to capture basketball's nuance through song, but that makes you a philistine.
Tuesday: Brooklyn defeats the Philadelphia 76ers 109-89
Jacuzzi Boys, "Glazin'"
Kicking off the week in strong fashion, we're going with the Miami garage-punks Jacuzzi Boys and their track "Glazin'" for the win over the 76ers on Tuesday. On the exterior, one would think this was an upbeat song to celebrate their fourth win in a row, but under the surface lies a seedy undertone. Like Andray Blatch being investigated by Philadelphia police for an alleged sexual assault that occurred in his hotel room, "Glazin'" is putting on a friendly face, but other's accounts of the events are much more NSFW.
Friday: Brooklyn defeats the Phoenix Suns 99-79
Destiny's Child, "Say My Name"
On Friday came the news that the third-best girl R&B trio from the 90s, Destiny's Child would be making a comeback. The news was met with excitement by the TRL Generation and questions of "who is Destiny's Child?" by everyone under 20. Much like those over 30 remember when the Phoenix Suns were a formidable opponent, and the under-20 set asked, "wait, aren't they moving to Seattle?" New Destiny's Child is like the new Suns, so we're going with a classic.
Sunday: Brooklyn defeats the Indiana Pacers 99-79
Meyhem Lauren, "Thousand Dollar Gym Shoes" feat. Action Bronson
The song for Sunday's game against the Indiana Pacers is "Thousand Dollar Gym Shoes" by Meyhem Lauren featuring Action Bronson from Lauren's most recent mixtape, Mandatory Brunch Meetings. Because, really, what the fuck is a 6 p.m. game? The biggest game of the week for the Nets against the third best team in the Conference fell somewhere between lunch and dinner, providing for a rowdy atmosphere at the Barclay's Center. But it took the players a bit to get going, waiting until the fourth quarter to use those expensive gym shoes to provide some big-time excitement. A big-time comeback. And a big-time statement.
Now the Nets are 8-1 under P.J. Carlesimo (the second best start by any Nets coach) and have climbed all the way to third place in the Eastern conference. This week they'll have two shots at the Atlanta Hawks—the team directly behind them in the standings—for a home series before the highly anticipated last match-up of the regular season against the New York Knicks. A game that could potentially be for first place in the conference. Not bad for a team who was .500 just two weeks ago.
