This week's weather is all about the jet stream and Alberta Clippers. For today through Wednesday the jet is bent in a trough over the East Coast and that will keep the temperature on the cool side. Today's high will only reach the lower 30s under a mix of sun and clouds. A tight gradient to the jet stream means we'll have a breezy day with winds 15-20 mph.
Tonight will see the first in a series of Alberta Clippers, low pressure systems that quickly move eastward from Alberta. The Clipper and an upper level disturbance in the jet give us a chance of snow flurries overnight into tomorrow morning. The air is pretty dry so we're not expecting much accumulation. Another clipper on Tuesday night might bring an additional inch of snow, especially north of the city. The snow should end early Wednesday and we should see some warmer weather, if you consider upper 30s warmer.
The forecast models haven't quite made up their mind as to what's going to happen toward the end of the week. Thursday looks to be partly sunny, but who knows what Friday will bring. It does look like a coastal storm will develop late Thursday night, but the strength and path of that storm is still unknown. The Weather Service is going with snow changing to rain while the Weather Channel is leaning toward all rain. The weekend, however, is looking pretty sunny, with milder temperatures by Sunday as a ridge develops in the jet stream.
