With its new Shared Streets initiative, the Department of Transportation has redesigned a span of Broadway, curtailing vehicle traffic and adding new protected space for bikers and pedestrians.

All vehicles were asked to drive 5 MPH throughout much of the Financial District, but many ignored the request and yelled at pedestrians to get off the street.

It's not entirely car-free, but it's progress!

For three days, New Yorkers will get the chance to try out life in a post-car society!
