Nearly 5,300 adults and juveniles were released from state custody under a state law that gave incarcerated people health credits to get out early.

A new report from the federal monitor overseeing New York City's jails found that recent steps to address the crisis at Rikers “have not materially abated the high risk of harm."

The second largest jail on Rikers Island is now under quarantine, a first since the start of the pandemic.

He declined to share details about what he witnessed during his roughly two-hour tour, but said that he did not speak to detainees or jail staff.

Demonstrators protested outside all five criminal courthouses across New York City, calling on judges to reduce the number of people they send to jail.

Karim Isaabdul was being held at the troubled city correctional facility on a parole violation.

“Today is about protecting human life, the lives of the people who are incarcerated as well as correctional officers,” Hochul said.

The warning was one plank of the mayor’s new five point plan to address ongoing chaos at Rikers Island, which has seen a spike in self-harm and violence.
