Christina-Taylor Green, the little girl born on September 11, 2001, who died in Jared Lee Loughner's January shooting in Tucson, is going to be honored with a 9'11" statue made from steel from the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.
Sculptor Lei Hennessy-Owen (who seems to specialize in this sort of thing) will be turning the steel from the two sites into an angel statue that will live at James D. Kriegh Park in Oro Valley, Arizona—where Green played Little League baseball. According to Green's relatives the little girl was very proud to have been a part of the Pirates Little League team and that it is important to them that “there will be an angel in the outfield watching over” the park.
On its way to Arizona, the statue will pass through Shanksville, Pennsylvania, to honor the victims of United Airlines Flight 93.
“That this angel would be made from the remnants of the 9/11 attacks makes this tribute especially touching,” the family said in a prepared statement. “Christina-Taylor wanted to be a symbol of hope for those touched by our nation’s great tragedy on 9/11, the day she was born.”
During a memorial service, President Obama framed the tragedy by noting little Christina's interest in her government (she was at the Safeway to see Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, the apparent target of the shooting), "I want us to live up to her expectations. I want our democracy to be as good as she imagined it. All of us - we should do everything we can to make sure this country lives up to our children's expectations."
