A 45-year-old woman was killed just steps from her home in Queens on Christmas when two drivers hit her one after another at an intersection, according to the NYPD.
Police said Antonia Freycinet was crossing 111th Avenue from north to south at 158th Street in Jamaica around 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday when she was struck by a driver heading westbound on 111th Avenue.
The driver knocked her down and kept going, according to NYPD officials. Moments later, the driver of a 2021 Ford heading in the same direction struck Freycinet while she was still lying on the ground, police said.
She was taken to Jamaica Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The Ford driver stopped farther down the block, was questioned by police and said he did not know he had hit someone, according to the NYPD. He was not arrested or charged.
Police said they did not know the make or model of the car whose driver first struck Freycinet. They added that they were still investigating the incident and were returning to the scene to gather surveillance video.
Freycinet lived on the corner of 158th Street and 111th Avenue, NYPD officials said.
Police data shows there were 249 fatal crashes in New York City this year through Dec. 22, down a little over 2% from the same point in 2023, but still significantly up from pre-pandemic levels. In the NYPD’s 113th Precinct, where Freycinet lived and was killed, there were four traffic deaths through Dec. 22 of this year, down from seven the year before, the data shows.
