After wishes of Bill Cowher becoming the Jets next head coach went nowhere in a hurry, word is now that the team has passed on other longtime veterans Marty Schottenheimer and Mike Shanahan, both lingering around the coaching bread lines. That leaves all eyes pointed on Giants Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, who is scheduled to interview with the team today. Spagnuolo is one of a handful of candidates without head coaching experience being talked about with other mentions of current Jets Offensive Coordinator Brian Schottenheimer and Boston College Head Coach Jeff Jagodzinski, but clearly the man behind the Giants "D" leads the pack. Both the Post and the News make cases for him today, one noting that the Giants value him so much that they're currently paying him a higher salary than Eric Mangini was picking up and the other noting how successful other former Giants defensive heads have done as head coaches with the list including Bill Parcells, Bill Belichick and Panthers Head Coach John Fox. Meanwhile, the ousted Mangini appears to be frontrunner as the new head coach in Cleveland.
