Despite a boom in the number of people riding bikes around NYC, the number of reported injuries sustained while cycling is declining. Last year, 2,730 cyclists were injured and 12 killed in traffic crashes, according to the DMV. In 2008, there were 2,916 injuries and 26 deaths. As you can see by this handy graph, cyclist injuries have dropped every year but three since 1998. (A high of 5,205.) However, fatalities are a different story; according to Streetsblog, cyclist deaths don't show any real pattern over the same period.

Serendipitously coinciding with the release of the injury data, CNN has just produced a cute video starring avid biker John Leguizamo. In it, he encourages everyone in New York to "go out there and buy yourself the cheapest, crappiest bike, get out there, and leave a smaller carbon footprint you big-footed, carbon dioxide spewing..."
