Police suspect the Queens man who slashed his pregnant wife may have jumped into the East River from the Whitestone Bridge. His wife (and victim) Patrona Kates, who suffered wounds to her throat and head, told the Daily News, "If [the police] find him, I hope they kill him." Fitzgerald Jolly—enraged by the announcement she was going to have a baby and her refusal to get an abortion—also stabbed Kates's twin sister, who tried to protect her.
"He wouldn't stop stabbing," recalled the pregnant woman. It started Monday night when Kates announced her pregnancy at another sister's home, in front of a crowd of relatives, including their two-year-old son and other children. "She was happy about the news and she shared it with him," remembered Venice Kates, but Jolly, an unemployed construction worker, had an extreme reaction. "We can't afford another child," he allegedly screamed, then tried to convince her to get an abortion. When she made clear her intention to have the baby, the "out of control" man picked up a kitchen knife and chased her into the bathroom.
Both sisters are now recovering, and the unborn child is unharmed. But police are still on the lookout for Jolly, whose car was found abandoned on the bridge.
