As if you needed any more reason to move directly from the warmth of your place of work to the warmth of your couch at home, the City of New York has sent out a WEATHER ALERT missive warning of "dangerously cold temperatures" tonight. Sure, cuddling your space heater is a terrible idea, but anything to end the cold, right?
According to the city's Office of Emergency Management, the weather alert is in place from tonight through Sunday, thanks to our upcoming fun-bag full of weather. The OEM says we can expect tonight's temperatures to be quite cold, with a low of 10 degrees and a super wind chill near 5 degrees. "Stay indoors as much as possible," the OEM warns, as if they have to tell us!
As always, if you see a homeless person or family outside tonight, please call 311 so the city can direct them to a shelter; be sure to check on your neighbors, particularly if they are elderly or suffer from chronic cardiovascular or lung conditions.
As we mentioned earlier, Saturday will be warmer, but the city still warns that wind chills will hover between zero and 10 degrees, with snow turning to freezing rain later in the evening. The OEM says we can expect icy streets and roads on Sunday, but by now penguin walking has become de rigueur in this miserable ice town, so what else is new.
The Departments of Sanitation and Transportation are readying their snow plows, salt spreaders and anti-icing units, and alternate side parking rules are suspended both toay and tomorrow.
Remember: wear layers, and remove wet clothing. If you are outdoors and shivering, go inside. And do not drink yourself a coat, it will not work. Now watch this winter safety video, which was clearly filmed before the city was transformed into Arendelle IRL:
