Yesterday, firefighters were able to restrain a man who was attacking his wife with a meat clever on Canal Street in Manhattan. Firefighter Jose Ortiz said he noticed the couple arguing at first, "I heard a commotion in the street and I look over, it's a man dragging this woman, grabbing her by the arm, dragging her, she's crying and she's screaming." And then, "Once I got closer, the man starts hacking at the woman. He hits her six, eight, maybe 10 times. So, we [he and fellow firefighter Jim Trainor] bum-rush him and get him against the fence."
Here's video of them restraining the suspect, Ming Guang Huang:
Another firefighter, Shane Clarke, helped them tackle the man. Clarke says, "Besides the World Trade Center, this was the craziest thing I’ve ever seen."
The firefighters also chased after the victim. The Post reports that she had been tossed "aside like a rag doll" and was "running down the street, leaving her thick, wedge shoes — and clumps of bloody hair — behind." Cops helped them find the injured woman at Division and Eldridge Street: "The woman was listed in critical condition last night at Bellevue Hospital but is expected to survive, officials said. She suffered several serious defensive wounds on her arms, according to law-enforcement sources."
Huang was charged with attempted murder.
