Two people were shot and injured on the Upper West Side on Sunday night, while a third was shot and injured less than two hours later in East New York, according to the NYPD.
No arrests have been made yet in either of the shootings, as police continue to investigate.
The Upper West Side shooting occurred around 7:45 p.m. at 92nd Street and Amsterdam Avenue. NYPD officials said officers responded to a 911 call about an assault in progress and found two males who were approximately 16 to 20 years old with gunshot wounds throughout their bodies.
Both were taken to a local hospital in stable condition, the officials said.
Shootings in the NYPD's 24th Precinct, which covers the northern end of the Upper West Side, are relatively rare, according to police data. Last year through Dec. 29, the precinct had four shootings, down from six in the same period in 2023.
The East New York shooting took place just before 9:30 p.m. on Sutter Avenue and Crystal Street. Police said a 16-year-old boy was shot in his left arm and groin, and was taken to Brookdale Hospital, where he was expected to recover.
There were 51 shootings in the NYPD's 75th Precinct, where the incident happened, last year through Dec. 29, police data shows. That was down 7% from 55 shootings by the same point in 2023.
An NYPD spokesperson said they did not have details on any suspects in either of Sunday night's shootings, which did not appear related.
The incidents come at the start of a new year where gun violence has already broken out in parts of New York City, in some cases fatally.
Police said a 41-year-old man who lived in Briarwood, Queens, was shot and killed in Brooklyn's Coney Island around 7:15 a.m. on Sunday. They also said a 17-year-old boy who lived in Inwood, Manhattan, was shot to death in the Bronx's Mount Eden neighborhood around 6 p.m. on Friday, while another 17-year-old boy was shot and injured in the same incident.
Last week, a 17-year-old boy was hurt in a shooting outside a school in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, as students returned from the holiday break, police said. And on New Year's Day, 10 people were shot and injured outside an event space in Jamaica, Queens, where dozens were gathered to memorialize a Brooklyn teenager who died in a shooting last fall.
This is a developing story based on preliminary information from the NYPD and may be updated.
