A person was struck by a northbound 2 train in Times Square this morning, according to the FDNY. A spokesman tells us first responders received the emergency call at 10:05 a.m., and the person is still being extricated. An MTA spokesman could not immediately comment on the incident, but the MTA website confirms that "due to a police investigation at the Times Square-42 Street Station, northbound 2 and 3 trains are delayed."
We'll update as more information becomes available.
Update 10:32 a.m.: The FDNY confirms the person was killed. The NYPD press office does not yet have any information about the incident. An MTA spokesman tells us the victim was an unidentified male, and that 2 trains are currently running along the 5 line. 3 trains are running local from Chambers to 96th Street.
Update 10:39 a.m.: The NYPD confirms they have a male DOA at Times Square, but would not say whether there was any criminality suspected.
Update 11:09: a.m.: A commuter who asked that we identify her only as Beth K. was in the train at the time of the incident. In an email, she says:
We were coming into the station at regular speed. The train stopped and the doors didn't open. They made an announcement that somebody had been injured, we weren't fully in the station and the MTA supervisors had not authorized them opening the doors yet.
After about 10 minutes they told us they would open one door in each car that was platformed and to walk forward if you were still in tunnel. When the conductor came to open our door he said, "Somebody jumped in front of the train, at this speed can you imagine? What could have been going on in their head."
We got off, I walk to the stairs, and the cops were interviewing a witness who said the guy ran down the stairs, to the platform and jumped. I believe it was the 41st/7av stairs that he ran down and jumped from.
