If you are planning on taking a drive (or a bus ride) up First Avenue this afternoon you might want to plan on a detour. A water main at First Avenue and 60th Street has broken leading the city to close First Avenue to traffic from 57th Street to 60th Street. Update: A reader sent us pictures, and mentioned one firefighter seemed pretty concerned.
Though the water has already been turned off the main appears to have affected a steam pipe as well. The roadway will remain closed while repairs are made. Update: Reader Tony tells us, "Every manhole cover around the city side of the 59th St. bridge is blowing some serious steam. One firefighter told me that they were afraid the whole street (E. 60th btwn York & First) might blow up."
