Two men, aged 22 and 25, were arrested in the wee hours of the morning today for attempting to climb the Williamsburg bridge, claiming they wanted to take pictures. Police Chief Ray Kelly described James Stafford and Brice Farrell, who were from Connecticut and Maryland, respectively, as "urban explorers," a rare species previously spotted scaling the same bridge back in 2003.
Stafford and Farrell were spotted around 3 a.m. by a late-night/early-morning Aviation Unit sky patrol, arrested and charged with reckless endangerment. "We don't see anything in terms of an attempt to damage the bridge," said Kelly. "What it does is put our police officers at risk to climb up on the bridge to get people down," he explained, before adding that he "certainly" would urge other people "not to do this." Try telling that to street artist Judith Supine, who put this bad boy atop the Bridge in 2009.
