Two pedestrians were killed by hit-and-run drivers in separate incidents in the Bronx and Manhattan today.
The first incident happened around 2:30 a.m. A police spokesperson said that officers responded to a 911 call about an unconscious man along the right lane of the eastbound Cross Bronx Expressway, near the exit ramp to White Plains Road. The man, 21-year-old Bronx resident Ronald Nival, was pronounced deceased at the scene.
A preliminary investigation has determined that a 2013 Peterbilt Dump Truck, which is owned by a company in Saddlebrook, NJ, was traveling in the center lane of the eastbound Cross Bronx Expressway when it struck Nival and continued driving. The vehicle did not remain at the scene. The Daily News reports that the driver "drove back to Saddlebrook, where he alerted his boss he may have struck someone, officials said. His employer contacted police, who were questioning the driver Thursday morning."
Police add that there are no arrests at this time and the incident remains under investigation.
Then around 5:30 a.m., officers responded to reports of a collision in the southbound side of the FDR Drive near 116th Street. They found an unconscious 33-year-old woman with severe trauma to the head; she was pronounced deceased at the scene.
A 27-year-old driver, who didn't stay at the scene, later walked into a local police station and told cops she thought she may have struck someone; she had damage to the passenger side of her vehicle as well.
Police add that she is currently being questioned in regards to the incident, but no arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.
