The Post today goes all Hoarders on us with a story on Kevin McCrary, an Upper East Side man with a trust fund, five cats, a cheap apartment (and van) so filled with stuff that last summer he actually slept on the street for a time. Sound familiar? That's because he actually was on Hoarders last year. But he's still at it, and—just like that show—it is hard to look away.
The 64-year-old McCrary, whose once-famous parents Tex McCrary and Jinx Falkenberg boast stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, has been collecting for years ("I consider myself a collector/hoarder," he told CBS). He's got bags and bags of stuff, ranging from old Discmen to shiny baubles. It isn't quite Collyer Brothers, but it isn't far off. And naturally some folks on the Upper East Side are more than happy to complain about it. Especially the van, which McCrary basically doesn't move ("he says he moves his van for alternate-side parking, but neighbors say he just opens the hood and pretends it’s broken down.")
"I don’t know what’s in there," a 44-year-old hairstylist, who refuses to walk past McCrary’s van with his beagle, tells the Post. "I avoid it like the plague." And he isn't the only one. "It’s really filthy. There’s garbage bags underneath and the other day we saw little mice in that planter box, like 10 or 12 little mice, and it was just so gross," a neighbor Anahita Kopet told CBS. Even "celebrity" neighbors like Cheetah Girls author Deborah Gregory, who tells the paper's videographer it is remarkable she's "written anything that has sold" with the van parked outside her window.
Still! The trust fund pack rat does have some fans. "He doesn’t bother nobody, he just picks up garbage from the street," one man told CBS. And he isn't the only one who feels that way, as you can see if you watch the Post's entertaining/depressing video on McCrary, below. As long as McCrary isn't hurting anyone or himself, who are we to judge? We do worry about his five cats stuck in that apartment though, they look awful cute in the pic he took of them with his taped-up found iPhone:
