Many people, including members of the Oklahoma Christian network, may think that the Yankees are a vastly overrated organization, but it's quite hard to argue with 27 World Series titles. But that doesn't mean that some of its members are immune from such criticisms: Alex Rodriguez, Joba Chamberlain, and Derek Jeter were voted most overrated players in a new anonymous poll of 185 ballplayers.
In the poll, to be published today in the newest issue of Sports Illustrated, A-Rod received 18 percent of the vote, Chamberlain 12 percent (he "won" last year) and Jeter 7 percent. Washington Nationals outfielder Jayson Werth, Boston Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon and Yankee Nick Swisher, each got 4 percent of the vote. A-Rod and Chamberlain took the dubious honor in stride: Rodriguez said, "I've been on this list before. I'll see you guys next summer again...I think it will be like that for the rest of my career. It's been like that for a long time. I think it's pretty amusing." Chamberlain said, "I guess I'm disappointed that I'm not No. 1," said Chamberlain, "I don't care. My bills are still paid and I still have a job. You can call me whatever you want, just don't call me late for dinner."
Jeter, who said he didn't participate in the survey, was a bit more touchy on the subject though: "We're doing this again? I'm focused on more positive things. I've never understood those anonymous polls." Rodriguez said he didn't remember being asked to take part in the survey, but he wouldn't have anyway, and it's definitely not because his feelings are hurt: "I think playing in the Major Leagues is so hard, everyone playing in the Majors is a great player. I have so much respect for anyone that wears a Major League uniform, I would never answer that." Aw, A-Rod is such a great teammate—it's almost as if he never talked trash about his supposed best friend Jeter to GQ magazine.
Despite all the team's many woes, at least Mets fans will never have to defend an A-Rod: "I'm a Mets fan. Some of our guys are overpaid - none of our guys are overrated," Queens resident Omar Kabi concisely told the News.
