At this weekend's Madoff auction, one lucky Long Island man, Steve Chow, walked away with a lot of socks and boxers for $1,700. At first we thought he was crazy, but what we didn't realize that he was making a killing. Chow told the Post, "They retail for $60 a pair [the Charvet socks], and I got about 100 pairs now!" Can someone please explain how a pair of socks gets to be $60?
As well as the socks, the lot contained a pair of black silk Armani pants, Prada pantyhose socks, and some new boxer shorts. Chow said, "The boxers, I might have to give it away as a gift. I may not be able to wear all the socks. I'll give them away as a gift." Charity aside, some people said that even clothing worn by the legendary Bernie Madoff shouldn't be that expensive. James Flaig, who dropped the $500 required to register for the auction and didn't bid, told Bloomberg News, "The word that comes to mind is silly. If Jesus Christ had owned it, I still wouldn’t pay these prices."
