The nor'easter is here! The center of the low pressure system is southeast of Montauk this morning and that spells a big mess for a region still recovering from superstorm Sandy. Heavy rain is moving from east to west across Long Island toward the city. As the rain moves westward it is going to meet with cold air dropping down from Upstate, giving the city a mix of rain and snow this afternoon. Winds will be coming out of the north at a good 25-30 mph with gusts to 50 mph. There's also a coastal flood warning through tonight for New York Harbor as a three-foot surge of water, and breaking 8-12 foot waves, coincide with high tides this afternoon and again late tonight.
The rain/snow mix this evening looks like it will become a rain/sleet mix for a while before changing over to all rain late tonight. The National Weather Service thinks the city may get up to a half-inch of sleet accumulation before the changeover begins. Points north and west may see several inches of snow. We're already at today's high of 40 degrees. Tonight's low will dip into the mid 30s.
Snow may briefly return to the city early tomorrow morning but the precipitation should mostly end by early afternoon. Thursday will still be a brisk and breezy day with a high only in the lower 40s. Clear skies and a stretch of warmer weather begins on Friday as a ridge of high pressure forms over the East Coast. Friday's high is expected to be around 50 degrees, Saturday in the mid 50s, and Sunday (Monday and Tuesday, too!) right around 60.
